Dr. Ballard is an explorer, discoverer, and historian best known for having discovered the TITANIC in 1985. He has also successfully tracked a number of other significant shipwrecks including the German battleship BISMARCK and the John F. Kennedy boat, the PT-109. He has a Ph.D. in marine geology and geophysics from the University of Rhode Island. He has spent 30 years at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution where he helped develop telecommunications technology to create “tele-presence” for his education initiative; this program allows thousands of students to accompany him on undersea explorations around the world. He’s also a tenured Professor of Oceanography and Director of the Center for Ocean Exploration at the University of Rhode Island.
Dr. Ballard uses his experiences as well as science and exploration in his keynote addresses to motivate and inspire teams from various lines of work. In his talk Science, Exploration and the Miracles of Human Achievement, he uses his passion for adventure and a practical approach to motivation, team building, and execution. He’s able to link the skills that led to his incredible achievements to the skills the audience members have to focus on their own dreams.
His other talk, Adventures in Deep Sea Exploration: Living the Dream, is about thinking outside of the box and taking risks to achieve long-term goals. According to Dr. Ballard, we don’t really know where the boundaries of achievement are until we push the envelope.
